3 Things You Can Learn From your Dentist at a Dental Implant Consultation
April 9, 2024
Dental implants are an incredibly sophisticated dental treatment, one that can produce incredible results when deployed properly. A lot of diligent research has gone into making this treatment better, which means that the average person often has a lot of questions about the treatment that they want answered.
If you have a dental implant consultation coming up, here are a few questions you may want to ask your dentist in order to learn more about the treatment.
Am I a Good Candidate?
One of the first and most important things to know is that dental implants require you to have fairly good oral health. If you’re dealing with serious gum disease, for example, that could increase your risk of an infection compromising the stability of your implants. The same goes if you have a condition that makes healing difficult, like diabetes or cancer.
While most people will be able to get dental implants, it’s worth talking to your dentist about whether this treatment is the best option for your needs.
Will Any Preliminary Procedures be Necessary?
If you are currently dealing with oral health problems, some preliminary procedures could be necessary before you can actually get your dental implants. For example, it’s common for people who have been missing their teeth for a long time to see their jawbone degrade, meaning that they have insufficient support for their dental implant. They may therefore need a bone graft, a procedure that is done to bolster the strength of the jaw.
When you meet your dentist for your consultation, it may be a good idea to ask if any of these procedures could be in your future.
What Will Aftercare Be Like?
One of the things that patients are most nervous about when it comes to dental implants is aftercare. Thankfully, this is generally fairly simple; you may be sore for a few days after the treatment, though if you’re gentle with your new implant you’ll find that this will fade fairly quickly.
At your consultation, you should talk to our dentist about what this process will entail and what you can do to make your recovery easier.
